Almeida Garrett

(1799 – 1854)

Almeida Garrett colaborou, a partir de 1836, na reforma cultural e educativa do país. Criou a Inspeção-Geral dos Teatros e Espetáculos Nacionais, o Conservatório Geral de Arte Dramática (escola de autores e de atores) e promoveu a construção, em moldes modernos, do Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. Fundou, com o objetivo de fomentar a educação do gosto público, dois jornais dedicados aos temas culturais.

Almeida Garrett

As from 1836, Almeida Garrett participated in Portugal’s cultural and educational reform. He founded the Inspectorate-General for Theatres and National Entertainment Shows, the General Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (the school of playwrights and actors), and promoted the construction, following modern forms, of the Queen Mary II National Theatre. He founded two newspapers dedicated to cultural themes to foster the education of the general public’s cultural taste.
